Participation strategy for an open internet


CIID researchers and strategists provided a deep analysis of the landscape of organisations using participation as a foundational element in a business model, and helped Mozilla identify opportunities to intentionally shape how they work with individual and organisations of collaborators and contributors. The resulting case studies and framework serve as examples and inspiration for Mozilla’s product teams, as they consider on how best to use open practices for the greatest impact and mutual value.

Throughout the project, CIID partnered with Mozilla’s Open Innovation Team, working in parallel with two Mozilla teams which were investigating open practices within Mozilla. We co-designed and facilitated workshops to bring the three tracks together to synthesise the research findings into a framework and set of tools for strategy planning.

As part of our ongoing partnership, an Industry Project with 12 students from CIID’s Interaction Design Programme provided a burst of exploratory thinking to help inspire the open source developer community. The resulting concepts will inspire Mozilla’s emerging technology team with use cases and new features for the next version of the web.
